We are very sad to report the passing of Gordon Coombs at the age of 85.
Gordon was an outstanding servant of Truro Fencing Club and a great ambassador for the sport of fencing. He served on the club’s committee for many years, and also as a trustee of the TFC Gold Foundation.
In his youth Gordon had been an accomplished international-level epeeist. Having given up fencing for many years, Gordon was inspired to start again by his grandson, and when he and his wife Joan moved to Cornwall they decided to take up sabre. They both applied themselves with great energy to acquiring the new skills, and Gordon went on to represent Great Britain at the World and European Veterans Championships.
Gordon will be remembered fondly by us all as a man of great wit, humanity and generosity, always warm and kind and ready to help new fencers and beginners at the club. A fierce opponent, great sportsman and an absolute gentleman, he will be greatly missed.
Our very best wishes go out to his wife Joan and to all his family.
